About Us

Red Hill Collective was founded by Shane and Kylie from a simple belief: healthy landscapes and strong communities grow together.

We’ve spent decades living and working on grazing country in northern Australia. We know the realities — variable seasons, tough decisions, and the constant balancing act between land, livestock, family and business. Our work is grounded in what actually happens on the ground, not just what looks good on paper.

Who We Are

  • Red Hill Collective was founded by Shane and Kylie from a simple belief: strong landscapes and strong communities grow together.

    We’ve built our lives around rural communities and the businesses and families that sustain them. This isn’t just theory for us — it’s what we live and breathe every day. We’ve ridden the seasons, the good years and the tough ones.

    What we do is based on real-world experience, and we understand the need to keep it practical.

    Why We Do This

    Because when country functions better, it creates opportunities and breathing space to tackle other challenges.

    When land holds water, grows groundcover and stays productive, it supports more confident businesses, healthier ecosystems and stronger communities. We don’t see land, people and productivity as separate — they’re deeply connected, and they work best when managed as a whole.

  • Working Together

    Shane brings practical, hands-on experience in land management, grazing systems and landscape function.

    Kylie brings big-picture thinking, communication and community insight — helping make sense of complexity and turn ideas into action.

    Together, we work alongside landholders, not over the top of them. We listen first, keep things practical, and focus on solutions that last.

    Together, we bring lived experience and grounded perspective to those building what comes next.

    Shane

    Shane’s worked across nearly every part of the beef supply chain, but he still prefers being in the paddock to sitting behind a desk.

    He’s good at reading country, watching how water moves and knowing when to leave things alone. Not big on quick fixes or fancy talk — if it works on the ground, he’s interested. If it doesn’t, he’s not.

    Kylie

    Kylie’s the people-and-words half of the operation.

    She’s worked across rural communities, advocacy, projects and communications — all while raising a family in rural areas. She’s good at asking the right questions, finding the right words, and helping people make sense of the bigger picture — especially when things feel messy or overwhelming.

    Equal parts practical and persistent, Kylie’s usually the one who gets things sorted and isn’t afraid to gently challenge the status quo.

    The Kids

    Red Hill Collective is very much a family story.

    Our kids are now young adults, and we’re incredibly proud of who they’ve become. They’ve grown up involved in the work — where helping out is normal, seasons matter, and you learn quickly how things actually function. Over time, they’ve developed a grounded, perceptive way of understanding country — not just as landscape, but as something living and connected.

    Ella-Beth is currently studying a Bachelor of Animal Science, majoring in Livestock Production. Her depth of animal knowledge, calm stock handling manner and genuine passion for livestock fit naturally into the work being done at Red Hill.

    Clancy is undertaking a boilermaking apprenticeship with a rural contracting crew in the Northern Territory. His ambition is to move into yard and infrastructure construction — combining his love of working cattle with building practical, fit-for-purpose infrastructure for northern grazing systems.

    Alongside them are their partners, Charlie and Liberty, who bring their own unique strengths and energy to Red Hill and are very much part of the family behind the work.

    They’re carving their own paths, but they care deeply about land, livestock, people and place. Knowing they’re thinking critically about the future keeps us accountable to the kind of work we choose to do.


  • Red Hill is challenging country.

    But if you care for it, it’s a sight to behold.

    Officially known as the Quilps Tableland, Red Hill juts up from the surrounding landscape — an ancient rise of red soil that has withstood thousands of years of wind and water. Steep escarpments form the sides of the tableland itself, falling away into highly dispersive soils that can unravel quickly when groundcover is lost.

    It responds quickly to how it’s managed.
    It gives you feedback — sometimes bluntly.

    As Brian Wehlburg from Inside Outside Management says, there’s no such thing as mistakes — only learning opportunities.

    Red Hill has been a very effective teacher.

    When we purchased Red Hill in 2018, after years of drought, it was severely degraded.

    Deep erosion gullies cut through the landscape. Large areas had scalded bare. More than a quarter of the property was effectively unusable for grazing.

    The country had been under pressure for a long time.

    It was clear the system wasn’t functioning.

    So we began by adjusting grazing pressure.

    Longer rest periods.
    More control over stock density and where they grazed.
    Infrastructure that made those decisions possible.

    Our priority was to increase groundcover.

    So we worked from the top of the catchment down.

    Contour earthworks across the tableland to slow and spread water.
    Targeted work on the lower country where erosion had taken hold.
    Deep ripping and strategic seeding to help soil structure recover.
    Organic matter returned to bare areas to protect soil and support regrowth.

    Layered steps.
    Done where they would make the most difference.

    Over time, the country began to respond.

    Groundcover increased significantly. Areas that had been bare began to stabilise. Water slowed and started to infiltrate rather than run off.

    Only around 10% of the property remains unsuitable for grazing. We continue to assess those areas carefully as the system improves.

    The property now carries more than double the stocking rate originally advised at purchase — with grazing decisions continuing to be refined as the landscape improves.

    Red Hill is still a working, evolving landscape.

    But it’s functioning again.
